Hi! Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the internet. I'm Sarah, an Accredited, Force-Free Dog Trainer through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, a licensed Family Paws Parent Educator, and a graduate of CATCH Canine Trainers Academy. I am passionate about helping dogs and their humans live their very best lives together.
I utilize science-backed, up-to-date methodology and Positive Reinforcement techniques to treat a wide variety of behavior issues. Fear-based aggression and reactivity are my specialties, but I can help you with anything from rowdy puppies to resource guarding… and more. Positive Reinforcement can be used to treat any behavioral issue (Yep! Even – and I’d argue, especially – the severe ones!). There is a plethora of scientific evidence to support the use of Positive Reinforcement, which has been shown to influence behavior far more effectively and with less fallout than obsolete, punishment-based techniques.
Communication is key to any good relationship. My goal is to bridge the communication gap between our two species and help you understand why our dogs do what they do. Understanding the “why” is critical to any successful behavior modification plan. We want to identify the root cause and tackle the problem at its core, instead of simply suppressing (i.e. punishing) the symptoms. For this reason, my training is not “obedience-centric;” obedience is not the end-all-be-all solution to most behavior issues. When dealing with chronic anxiety, reactivity, aggression, or any other intense behavior problem, we want to focus on utilizing behavior therapies (such as Classical Counter Conditioning and systematic Desensitization) to help the dog feel better about the things that trigger the undesirable behavior. Ironically, you’ll find that the obedience portion comes naturally once you have a more relaxed dog that has been given the skills to cope with previously stressful situations.
Don’t have a severe behavior issue that you need help with? Maybe you just brought home an 8-week old puppy and you want to start off on the right foot. Maybe you just adopted a senior dog and want help enriching their golden years. Or perhaps you just want to maintain and improve some basic obedience skills. Whatever the case, I’d be honored to join you on this journey and provide you with the assistance you seek.
Happy Training!
I'm excited to announce that I returned to college in August 2023 to pursue a psychology degree! Barks and Rec will be closed on Mon/Weds while I attend classes, & Sundays for a day off. My response times may be a little delayed as I navigate being a full-time student & a business owner. Thank you for understanding!
